The route


Sat 24th June – St Bees – Ennerdale Bridge. Route as Wainwright described via Cleator and Dent Fell. 15 miles, 2,315ft ascent.

Sun 25th June – Walk to Rosthwaite via Haystacks (a mountain we climbed with Dad as a child) and Honister slate mine. 14.1 miles. 2,792ft ascent.

Mon 26th June – Walk to Grasmere via Lining Crag, 8 miles 2,901ft ascent.

Tues 27th June – Walk to Patterdale via the great tongue and angel tarn. 8.4 miles. 3,148ft ascent. We camped a few times with Dad at nearby Glenridding.

Weds 28th June – Walk to Shap via Kidsty Pike (the highest point on the Walk).  15.3 miles, 4,138 ft ascent.

Thurs 29th June – Walk to Kirkby Stephen via Orton and Smardale. 19.4 miles, 1,771ft ascent.

Fri 30th June – Walk to Keld via nine standards rigg. 12 miles 1,690 ft ascent.

Sat 1st July – walk to Reeth via old lead mines. 12 miles. 1,790 Ft ascent.

Sun 2nd July – Walk to Richmond via Marrick and Marske. 10.8 miles,  1,100 ft ascent.

Mon 3rd July – Walk to Welbury via Kiplin Hall and Danby Wiske, 19.5 miles 806 ft ascent. Deviation from Wainwright’s original walk here to walk further north and prepare to cross the A19 dual carriageway on a bridge rather than the notorious flat crossing near Ingleby Arncliffe. This crossing has been described as the most dangerous bit of the walk and there is a campaign to build a bridge.

Tues 4th July – Walk to Clay Bank Top (Lord stones), returning to the Wainwright path just south of Swainby. 11.2 miles. 1,365 ft ascent.

Weds 5th July – Walk to Blakey Ridge via the wainstones and an old ironstone railway alignment. 12.1 miles. 2,300 ft ascent.

Thurs 6th July – Walk to Glaisdale via fat Betty. Only 625 ft ascent. 9.7 miles.

Fri 7th July – Walk to High Hawsker via Grosmont (NYM railway). 13.8 miles.

Sat 8th July – family walk the easy, flat 5 miles into Robin Hood’s Bay.

Total ascent on last 2 days – 2,264ft
